Careful breeding is the first step in having a healthy happy pet, training is almost as important .

Training your family pet is the second most important thing you can do to ensure a long and happy life from your new family member. I will provide guidelines on general obedience at the time you bring your puppy home. If you have problems with training your puppy please feel free to contact me. it would break my heart to hear of behavioral problems with one of my dogs after it becomes a big problem. You have to remember that the sweet little puppy you are bringing home is going to grow into a large dog.
The three dogs that live in my house with me are pictured above. Indy knew sit, down, and come by the time he was 11 weeks old. I feel that training starts the day your puppy walks into your house. The white dog is my Siberian Husky, Sheba. I rescued her at 11 months old as her third owner. She was quite a handful when we brought her home. Although many Siberian breeders tell you that you can never have them off lead, Sheba routinely goes for loose walks at my 150 acre family farm. Conan is the Cairn Terrier. He has been with me from the day he was born. Unfortunately we recently lost him to cancer at 12.5 yrs old. He is missed very much. Up until he was 5 years old I was in College and living with my parents. He had very little formal training, yet he would lie through a college biology class without disturbing anyone. A Cairn terrier is also a breed that is considered unmanageable off lead. I am a firm believer that any dog is trainable unless there is something mentally wrong with it.

Here are just a few simple rules applied when you bring your puppy home that makes raising them much easier. It also sets ground rules for when they are older.

#1 If you don't want a 80-90 pound dog on your furniture,
don't let them up when they are 10 pounds!
#2 Crate training keeps your new family member out of
trouble when you aren't home , makes house training
easier, and gives your new baby a secure place to
     relax and take naps.
#3 Jumping up is never allowed!!! It is a very hard habit to
break if it is allowed even once.
#4 Never just let your puppy out the door. make him/her sit
and wait until you are out first and give a verbal OK. This
helps assert dominance passively, and is safer because
you won't have to worry about them trying to run out
the door all of the time.
#5 Remember that a dog that has boundaries, and rules to
follow is happier. In a pack there is a leader and you
     need to be it.
